How did we learn to Pray, and does Hashem Pray? Empty How did we learn to Pray, and does Hashem Pray?

So we learn in meseches Brachos zayin amud aleph (7a) from R' Yochanon mishum R' Yose:

Minayin shehaKodosh Baruch Hu mispalayl (From where do we know that the Holy One Blessed is He, prays?)
    Shenemar (For it is stated)
Vhaviosiym el-har kadishiy vsimachtiym bivays tifilasiy (I will bring them to My holy mountain and make them joyful in the House of My Prayer.) [Isaiah 56]
Tifilasam lo neemar (It does not say, "house of their prayer")
    ela (but rather)
tifilasiy ("the House of My Prayer")
Mikol shhaKadosh Baruch Hu mispalayl (From here we learn that the Holy One Blessed is He, prays.)

    ----------------

This can be a difficult concept. Why would Hashem need to pray? He is praying to Himself! The content of His prayer merely expresses His desire... He can do what he wants any time, who can override Him?

R' Saadia Gaon in Otzar HaGeonim explains that G-d does not mean to pray, but that He is demonstrating HOW to pray. Interestingly enough, mispalayl means "He Prays". We are taught in meseches Rosh Hashanah (17b) that G-d wrapped Himself in a Tallis and taught Moshe Rabbeinu the liturgy of the 13 Attributes of Mercy.

    ----------------

The Gemara discusses the prayer of G-d:

May mitzalay? (What does He pray?)
Rav Zutra bar Toviayah said in the name of Rav:
yihiy ratzon milfonay (May it be My will)
shyichebshu rachamay es kaasiy (that My mercy conquer My anger)
viyagolu rachmay al midosay (and that My mercy overcome My sterner attributes)
viesnahayg em bonay bimidas rachamiym (and that I behave towards My children with the attribute of mercy)
viekonas lohem lifniym mishuras hadiyn (and that for their sake I go beyond the boundary of judgement)

    -------------------------------

G-d pleads with us that we better our ways so that we may be deserving of His mercies, Rashba says that it is constantly G-ds' will to treat us with mercy, but often our sins prevent Him from doing so.

From this, may we all learn how to follow G-ds' lead in prayer, that we pray for the right things, leading us to do the right things.

    Have a great Shabbos!
