I am buying a new house and am seriously thinking about hiring movers this time because i hate moving with a passion. Anyone here ever used a moving company and how did it go?

Re: Moving companies
When I bought my house, the initial plan was to rent a u-haul and have 4 or 5 friends help me move. Unfortunately, the weekend it was supposed to happen, we got 8 inches of snow, and one friend didn't even leave his house for 3 or 4 days. I ended up hiring a moving company (it was Mayflower), and it was the BEST thing I ever did. There is an industry standard on a minimum hours (I think it's 4 hours). Call a couple of companies for prices and do a little research, it'll be worth the money you spend.
The one thing that I found is that it's best to have everything packed, in boxes, before the movers get there. If it's not furniture, and it's not in a box, they won't take it (that means no throwing last minute things in garbage bags and expecting it to go on the truck). For breakables, go to the liquor store and get empty boxes (find out what day they get their deliveries because A LOT of people do this). Other boxes can best be gotten at a super-market, you'll just need to tape them up, because they are usually broken down after stock. It's pointless to BUY boxes or have the movers box up stuff as long as you can do it yourself. Have a packing party with buddies (beer and pizza usually go well for this kind of thing).

Re: Moving companies
It was just over $400. But, that was 8 years ago. I would just call around for quotes.
