Did anyone NOT see this coming?

OAKLAND, Calif. — A protest that shut down the Port of Oakland to show the broadening reach of the Occupy Wall Street movement ended in violence when police in riot gear arrested dozens of protesters overnight who broke into a vacant building, shattered downtown windows, sprayed graffiti and set blazes along the way.

At least four protesters were hospitalized Thursday with various injuries, including one needing stitches after fighting with an officer, police said. Several officers were also injured but didn't need hospitalization.

"We go from having a peaceful movement to now just chaos," protester Monique Agnew, 40, said early Thursday.

Protesters also threw concrete chunks, metal pipes, lit roman candles and molotov cocktails, police said.

The far-flung movement of protesters challenging the world's economic systems and distribution of wealth has gained momentum in recent weeks, capturing the world's attention by shutting down one of the nation's busiest shipping ports toward the end of a daylong "general strike" that prompted solidarity rallies across the U.S.

Several thousands of people converged on the Port of Oakland, the nation's fifth-busiest harbor, in a nearly five-hour protest Wednesday, swarming the area and blocking exits and streets with illegally parked vehicles and hastily erected, chain-link fences afterward.

Port spokesman Isaac Kos-Read said evening operations had been "effectively shut down."

Port officials hoped to resume maritime operations Thursday "and that Port workers will be allowed to get to their jobs without incident. Continued missed shifts represent economic hardship for maritime workers, truckers, and their families, as well as lost jobs and lost tax revenue for our region."

Big trucks were backed up Thursday morning as footage on KGO-TV showed about a dozen protesters manning a chain link fence blocking a port entrance. Truck drivers argued with protesters, who said they planned to stay until at least 9 a.m.

Considering there are people at the OWS protest don't even know what they are protesting, or they are getting PAID to be there, I think a lot of us saw this coming.

Well it is getting uglier by the day. People are dying now from drug overdoes, an old woman was pushed down stairs, people are taking their children to these things which puts them in danger. Now they are trying to shut down Burger King lol.

Funny Nancy Pelosoi was very supportive of them as were some other lefty law makers. Wonder where they stand now?

I drove down Front Street in Harrisburg yesterday afternoon, and there were about 4 or 5 tents with a sign that said "occupy front street." I laughed. I think there were about 2 or 3 people milling around. There were 2 or 3 signs stuck in the ground, and I don't even remember what they said, because they didn't make any sense.

Someone made a comment a while ago about the difference between the Tea Party protests and the OWS protests... the point was made that the Tea Party protests were all non-violent, and they have actually made a difference. The OWS people are only making things worse, and they look like idiots doing it!!

Occupy Protests Plagued by Reports of Sex Attacks, Violent Crime

    AP2011
Protestors set up a "safe haven tent" at Zuccotti Park this week after reports of sexual assaults at the protest site. The miltary-grade tent can accomodate up to 19 people.
A rash of reports of sexual assaults at Occupy Wall Street protests across the country has both police and activists raising red flags.
Nearly a half-dozen assaults have been reported at Occupy camps, including three at the New York City protests, which have prompted protesters to set up a “women only” tent in Manhattan's Zuccotti Park to provide a safe haven.
“The concern would be the rapes and attacks that aren’t reported,” said Sgt. Ed Mullins, president of the Sergeants Benevolent Association, a police union in New York City. “We have no way of really knowing. If you have three or five crimes reported, you really don’t know if it’s eight or 10 that happened.”

He also noted how young many of the protesters are.
"They are in the lion’s den, so it’s not surprising that they are more susceptible to crimes,” he said.
The first reported incident occurred on Oct. 8, when a man was accused of sexually abusing a woman who was in a sleeping bag at Zuccotti Park. The victim did not report the incident until a few days later, when she saw the suspect, David Park, 27, at the protest site again.
Park, a Connecticut resident, had been arrested for disorderly conduct at a previous march, and he had numerous warrants out for him in both New York and his home state before the protests began.
Another incident was reported last week when a Brooklyn man, Tonye Iketubosin, 26, was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in her tent at Zuccotti Park on Oct. 25.
Iketubosin, a volunteer at the Occupy Wall Street “kitchen,” was questioned about the alleged rape of a second woman on Oct. 29.
Reports of sexual abuse also surfaced in Dallas, where a 23-year-old man was accused of having sex with a 14-year-old runaway girl, and in Cleveland, where cops opened an investigation of a sexual assault that allegedly occurred on Oct. 15.
Organizers for Occupy Wall Street did not return messages seeking comment, but they released a lengthy statement addressed to the participants.
“As individuals and as a community, we have the responsibility and the opportunity to create an alternative to this culture of violence,” the statement reads. “We are working for an OWS and a world in which survivors are respected and supported unconditionally… We are redoubling our efforts to raise awareness about sexual violence. This includes taking preventative measures such as encouraging healthy relationship dynamics and consent practices that can help to limit harm.”
The incidents of sex crimes, reports of petty theft, assaults and general outbursts of violence have sprung up not only around Wall Street, but in Occupy camps across the country.
And many of the protesters have become more aggressive overall in recent days.
The most serious incident was reported in downtown Portland last night -- cops responded to calls of a Molotov cocktail being set off near the city's World Trade Center. Authorities had received unconfirmed information a week earlier that people within the Occupy Portland encampment were constructing the crudely made bomb, which is normally fashioned from a glass bottle filled with gas and a soaked rag or cloth sticking out of the opening as a wick.

Looks like it may be winding down. The NY judge has said "no sleepovers" and mayors in other cities are geting tired of the stuff and becoming more aggressive with the protesters.

Doesn't look like it's winding down too much.. they Just interrupted one of POTUS's speeches.. lol.

funny how people keep trying to compare them to the Tea Party. The two are nothing alike. Can you imagine how the media would react if the people at Tea Party rallies acted like this???

It's what happens when liberals don't get what they want. We as conservatives might picket and march, liberals desecrate/destroy/get violent.

    I expected it.

Funny thing is, I am talking to a woman the other night who said she stands behind these people and their "peaceful protest" I said um, these people are peaceful? with all the drug overdoses, sexual assaults, a murder or two, some robberies and countless assaults. she claimed: "Yeah the police really stirred them up."
As someone in the Law enforcement field I almost said, "Yeah we always make people do that."
somehow I held my tongue Rolling Eyes
